Mortgage crisis hits SunTrust earnings, but stock rises

The first part happened Wednesday at SunTrust, which said profits plunged 99 percent. Like so many of its counterparts, it cited falling home values, rising delinquencies and asset-backed securities that are no longer as valuable as they once were.

But SunTrust Banks Inc. shares rose 7.74 percent Wednesday and finished at $65.73. The company's stock has gained nearly 13 percent on a volatile week on Wall Street.
